- As basic robotic technologies for rapid and flexible responses in the real world, we are studying sensor-based manipulation combined with high-speed vision and also robot mechanisms that have built-in intelligence in order to realize manipulation that differs from that of humans.
Batting Robot
To realize a robot system for batting faster than a human, we developed a batting robot by combining highspeed vision units and a high-speed manipulator. The batting robot predicts the time and course of a ball at the batter instantaneously by the two high-speed vision units operating at 1000fps and swings the bat at high speed by the highspeed manipulator according to the predicted information.
In fact, the robot successfully hit back 160km/h balls pitched from a pitching machine. The following movies show the highspeed batting experiments. The high-speed manipulator of the robot is positioned 6.7m away from the cameras and hits balls according to the calculated and predicted 3D trajectory information. The robot realized high-speed manipulation beyond the capability of humans.
